This post is for a new trimester, let's make this post simple, I'm sure there are lots of explanation and history about surround sound, but at the end, what's important is to understand the concept.

A lot of people were curious about what's the point one means, it actually has a meaning for it, and it's used in many of Surround Sound standards. One of it the most common Dolby Surround 7.1 is shown below,

The term "7.1 = 7 full bandwidth channels + 1 low-frequency effects channel

Bandwidth channel can be known as the number of positions the speakers were placed at.  While the low-frequency effects channel is for audio tracks specifically intended for deep, low-pitched sounds ranging from 3-120 Hz.

Holes on Theater Screens?
A straight reason is that there are speakers behind the screens for the Surround Sound to work, It's both genius and space saving for cinemas to operate speakers this way. A typical cinema screen has about 5,500 perforations per square foot, also there were horn-driven speakers for the loud and clear experience. These holes were each 0.047 inches in diameter, even if you stand in front of the screen, it's barely noticeable.
